Whilst the story of mead is a global one that goes back millennia, our story with the beverage begins in 2016. The journey began when our founder Matthew Williams was on holiday in Norway, he wanted to try something new, and since he did not read Norwegian, his choice of beverages was based on the appearance of the bottle. He discovered a clay bottle which had vikings on the label.

He bought the bottle and discovered it was mead. He fell in love with the sweet taste of mead right then and there. When he returned to Ireland, he realised it was impossible to find sweet mead and so he set to the task of trying to recreate the drink.

After years of trial and error, and slowly getting better equipment and ingredients he finally had a drink he was happy with. When he heard that others were interested in buying the drink, he felt rude not to let people in on it, so the dream of the Friar's Deoch Brewery was born.
